Eddy Merckx Gran Fondo 18 Jun 11
Who's up for this Eddy Merckx classic. http://sport.be.msn.com/cyclingtour/granfondo/2011/eng/ .It is as close to racing Liege-Bastogne-Liege as you will get. 3 distances - 80km/ 124 km/ 175km. This is a flatlanders nightmare with over 20 climbs on the 124 and 175 Km (there is no flat section, either you are going up or down). Don't be scared.... And it's cheap, only 10 euro for the two shorter distances and 30 euro for 175 km. Let me know.

Looks like it is June 18. Might be interested in the mid length ride (124k). What distance are you going to ride?

Online registration closes June 6. Any takers?
The two shorter distances are sportifs. The longer distance, 175 km is the race... the rider to the top of the last climb earns a new Eddy Merckx bicycle. I am seriously considering the 175 km, not that I think I will win a bike or anything. It will be my last opportunity for some a few years to road ride in Europe. I can't think of a better way to close it out but to ride nearly 100 hilly miles with Eddy Merckx.
I plan on driving up on Friday, then ride and drive home on Saturday.

I'm signed up for the 124km, and plan on going up Friday night, and coming back upon completion. Any plans for carpooling?

Signed up
I'm registered for the 175, wife and I will leave Friday sometime (family day???). Plan on riding it with a heart rate monitor and see if I can get lucky enough to maintain a target heart rate. This will be a glorified training ride rather than a fondo. The l'etape is the main goal.

I wanted to ride a L'etape de Tour before I left Europe, doesn't look like it will happen this go around. Good luck!

Good Ride
Soto,
Did you get that pump you were looking for? Plenty of suffering on the middle half of the 175k. 20mph winds, and lots of rain. Mur de Huy was fun though. It was so steep I almost did a wheely going up to the top.

Reed,
Thanks for stopping and checking. I ended up waiting over 30 minutes for the service van, starting walking once the rain started. they made me pay 8 euros for the tubes. Nonetheless, spent the next 50 miles riding by myself with the wind and rain, totally sucked. Finally found a small group in the last 20 km. The Mur de Huy was the worst hill i have ever climbed, but like you said, fun..... ( I think it is harder than any of the Tour of Flanders climbs).
