Liberty Trail Ride
Normandy, France
6-8 June 2014
Registration Information:
* Deadline: 12 April 2014
* Cost: 100€. Price includes an event jersey and tickets for three lunches (plus mid-route snacks) and covers the motorcycle escort, emergency medical and roadside repair services, and “sag” bus.
* Participation is limited, though the organizers have not informed us yet of the cut-off number. They expect large interest in the event given the 70th anniversary of D-Day. * You can register and pay on-line at their website: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] However, the registration process works only in the French-language version under the tab “Inscription en ligne.” For those who know some French, give it a try. Once you get through the registration process, the payment transaction can actually be done in English through PayBox.
* Because of the website limitations, I’ve provided an English-language version of the registration form, which can be mailed or emailed to the organizers. Payment can be made by cashier’s check or bank transfer. (Payment information provided below.)
About the Ride
* Three days, beginning Friday morning 6 June and ending in the late afternoon of Sunday 8 June.
* The routes average 120-130K per day.
* The daily rides will begin and end in Périers, with a midday meal and mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks. The full daily distance is therefore broken up into four segments of approx. 30-35K.
* The event will begin with the traditional church service in Périers and departure from the city hall with commemorative ceremonies along the way, including Ste-Mère-Église, St. Lȏ, and Coutances.
* The routes are planned to take us through some of the most beautiful countryside and militarily significant regions of the Cotentin Peninsula. Although not as hilly as the Ardennes, there will be plenty of climbs. Lower Normandy is not flat!
* We will ride in a peleton with motorcycle escort throughout.
* This is not a competitive event and riders are not allowed to get out ahead of the route captains leading the peloton. The overall average speed is approx. 23 kph.
* Road bikes only are allowed.
* Cyclists who can’t keep up with the peloton will be required to finish the ride in the “sag” bus.
* The city of Périers offers free lodging in the town gymnasium to any cyclist. They provide cots and bathroom/shower facilities. Cyclists bring their own bedding. There’s also room for those who want to park their campers or vans there.
