Whether through racing, group rides, community involvement or social events centered on cycling, K.M.C. Cycling's primary purpose is to further the sport of cycling in the KMC, and provide a valuable cycling outlet to its members. We are a not-for-profit organization that values diversity, friendship and, above all, a good ride.

PCSing to Rammy

Hey Everyone,
I am moving to the Kaiserslaughtern area this summer. I am currently a daily bicycle commuter and I plan to continue commuting when I get to Germany. Do any of you have any recommendations for what city I should live in? I'll be going to Ramstein every day and I would like to live away from base a little. However, I would prefer no longer than a 10 mile commute one way. Also, I would like to try to stay on bike trails and back roads. I ride a Salsa Vaya (touring setup) and I usually carry between 20 and 50 lbs. with me so I probably need to avoid forest trails.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Welcome to KMC Cycling!!! Commuting is very easy here in Germany because there are bike paths everywhere to get you where you're going. If you wanna stay on the flats I would recommend areas north, east and west of the base where you'll have mostly rolling hills but to the south of Ramstein is where the fun stuff is...

Second what he said above. South of base you start seeing some sharp inclines to some decent elevations (nothing crazy). But an example is in the back of my village is a paved path that is 12% grade. There are paths connecting villages all over the place. I'm not a road biker but I've had a frame and fork laying around for a couple years that I will be building cause you can get to so many places without driving (although driving is a blast don't get me wrong :-D )
Looking on the Map the villages of Kindsbach, Landstuhl, Hauptstuhl, Bruchmuehlbach-Miesau, and Vogelbach are at he base of the hills (you will notice all of those cities form a line on the map (there is a reason for that). Anything directly south or south east of those will have you with one nice climb to get to them (such as the climb from Bruchmuehlbach-Miesau to Lamsborn is LONG, twisting and grinding - I love it in a car!).
