I'm planning on making the trip and will probably do the 134km this year.

Anyone else planning on going up for the ride and watching the Ronde on Sunday?

Since Amstel is closed for registration AGAIN!!! I will likely be heading up for this. I can take one more in the truck. I need to clear the date with my school schedule, but it should be OK.

I will be doing the 134km as well, and I will be going without family, so will have room for 1 with bike. Plan on taking Friday off, then staying to watch on Sunday.

I have been TDY for the last month, but would definitely like to jump in on the trip. Would like to do the 134km and stay for the race the following day. Is preregistration required for this trip? Additionally, is everyone looking to billet at the same location...any details? Are there any available seats/bike storage for vehicles heading out? What is the plan for securing the bikes on race day?

Thanks

RVV weekend

Post by velo-doc on Sun Feb 05, 2012 5:24 pm

I've booked Friday and Saturday night at the Renaissance(info below). Comes out to about $50.00 per person per night for double occupancy. I have a friend coming in from the US, so I am going to take Fri/Mon off and will probably head up to Brussels earlier on Friday to do some sightseeing. We are planning to do the 134k this year. The short course blew by pretty fast last year...although it may have been the hangover that kept me from feeling the climbs! Anyway, planning the middle distance, which starts and ends at the same place as the short course. Pre-registrtion is not necessary, but will save you a few bucks.

I made my reservations at hotel Toren which is near the start finish. Plan on riding from The hotel making it a true century day. The link is below and I still have room for one person one bike potentially two people two bikes. I'm leaving Friday morning to get up there good time in the afternoon and then maybe sightsee or some more riding depending on weather. Coming back Sunday after the race.

I wish...

Post by Reed on Thu Mar 15, 2012 9:07 am

Won't make it this year. Doing the Paris-Roubaix challenge the following day. Ended up doing the Skoda Muur-Challenge last week b/c I wanted to hit the Kappelmuur.

Also signed up for:
Amstel-Gold
LBL Cyclo
Frankfurt Velotour (Pending leave request)
Fleche Wallonie Cyclo
La Chouffe Classic

Doing these mainly for fun. I'm not a hammer on group rides, just nice ways to rack up miles.

It was an awesome weekend in Belgium. A little cool and overcast for the ride on Sat, but Sun was awesome on the Kwaremont!

Anyone else planning on going??

Registered for the mid-length course. Looks like the ride will be limited to 14,000! Participants. Now I have reason to ride to work hard.

Sharing Lodging?

Post by airborne.s2000 on Wed Feb 20, 2013 9:19 pm

The +1 isn't coming with me to Flanders; does anyone want to split the cost of travel and lodging? I can bring the wife's car and leave her mine, giving room for three people (myself included) with bikes and gear.

Last chance to share!

Post by airborne.s2000 on Fri Mar 22, 2013 7:58 pm

I have a room in Waregem, about 17km from the short and medium distance start point. The room is 206EUR for two nights, as I am driving up on Friday afternoon, riding on Saturday, watching at least some of the race on Sunday, and coming back Sunday afternoon.

I would love for someone to chip in and split the cost of gas and the room. Although I originally thought I could take my wife's car, she is heading to Frankfurt for Easter, so I will be driving my S2000. I have a nice bike rack that supports up to 2 bikes by the wheels, and there is enough room in the trunk for a good size bag (holds 2 sets of golf clubs) and I will put my bag on the trunk rack. Of course, my sports car gets less than excellent mileage, so I expect to fill up on the Belgian economy twice (50l of premium each time, should be 85EUR per tank. Ouch!) Add to that one tank of premium on Esso price ($55) Still, cutting the whole thing in half leads to ~210EUR each).

The hotel includes free parking, so the car is taken care of, and has free wifi.

Any takers? Email me at my forum name @gmail.com or call the number in my profile, or just respond to this message. I am leaving Friday around noon, anyone who talks to me by 1000 (10:00 AM) that day can ride with me.

Anyone else riding want to meet for beer Saturday evening? I am staying in Waregem, about 15km from the finish line, and am not heading back until Sunday afternoon, as I want to see some of the pro race. I am game to meet anywhere in the area. Give me a call, or post here.

I don't know why I keep paying money to be tortured. Today was cold, I rode alone, and now my legs are cramping, even after a hot bath, and a nice walk around town. Averaged 25.0 km/hr for 133.5 km with 1638 Hm. Ugh. I took a little video here and there, and I will probably pay for the pictures that were taken once they post, maybe even the video. If I buy the video, I will make a montage with my POV video and the external video.

To top the day, I dropped my chain inside the cassette on the ride from the hotel to Qubus, and broke a spoke. The little Shimano help stand didn't have any spokes the right length for my wheels, so I rode on the broken wheel, with the rear brakes removed to prevent rubbing. At about 100km, I broke another spoke, then a third on the final cobblestone climb. I was right at the video camera when that happened, so I hope to get my expletives on tape. Still, my new carbon rims were awesome (I doubt I could have finished the ride if I had broken a spoke on aluminum rims), and I am glad I decided to put 28mm tires on for the ride.

Nice job. 28mm tires is definitely a smart choice for anything in Belgium on cobbles. What PSI were you running? I would guess 80-90 would have been the most comfortable. Those climbs don't look like much on paper, but they are brutal. We rode them a couple summers ago and they just go straight up it seems.

Broken spokes suck, but once one goes, it will usually take friends with it. Pretty easy fix with the wheels you bought. No boutique spokes to buy. Might want to take a look at the limit screw on the derailleur though.

Yup...got mine from Bobby on Sunday. Pretty sweet. I need to get some tubless tires on 'em and go out for a spin.

They're MTB wheels...but a 50mm deep set would really help on the long fire-road sections of the race series this summer! Very Happy
