Spangdahlem Road Race on 20 Aug
There will be a Road Race in Spang next Saturday. It's usually 55k for the men (5 laps around the base). Day-of-race sign up starts at 0900 at the Commissary parking lot. Here's the link to the Facebook event page where you can pre-register:

Re: Spangdahlem Road Race on 20 Aug
Last year we went and had a whopping two members of the (unmentionable name) club. We need a much better showing this year.
Here is the Garmin data from my ride last year. I wasn't with the lead group for more than about two miles, got caught at the end of the pack when a split happened and couldn't catch up. . .ooops

Anyone need to car pool up there. I think my wife is riding, which means we have room for two or three more.

Well unfortunately one of the premier MTB marathons is on that day. Most of the locals even camp out the night before Brian. I would've loved to join you guys. But there are quit a few members already pre registered. 19. / 20. August 2011

I'm looking at possibly making it. I just got back from 2wks in the US...off the bike, but am itching to get back into it. Would be nice to have a strong showing.

Thanks for the offer, Kendall...the beers are tempting. I'm hoping to take the family to the race, since I've been gone for a few weeks. The marathon takes me out of the picture for a good part of the day. I'm sure you all will have an awesome ride...take photos.

Re: Spangdahlem Road Race on 20 Aug
Pulled some pictures off of Spangdhalem's website's coverage of the race. Is anyone heading toward spang and might be able to grab a hard copy of the paper? It would be a great tool to have when talking to sponsors in the spring, depending on which photo the paper used...

The cutline on this photo was a little poorly written. It's lead in was a mention of the guy behind Chris, throwing his arms up in celebration... NOT of Chris in front of him, winning the race! Well, anyway it's a cool shot. Thanks for representing us so well Chris!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Good shot of the pack .... look at all that red white and black!
Here's a closer look:

Re: Spangdahlem Road Race on 20 Aug
The shots of the "peleton" on the traffic circle were taken at the end of lap one, and I definately was not feeling that great since it takes me a bit of time to warm-up. My legs were warm after I took a flier for almost one lap between laps two and three. I recovered on the back for a lap, then turned on the gas in the last km to the finish. So, I did have to come from the back of the pack...but it didn't seem like anyone else wanted to win the race, so it wasn't as hard as it would seem.
Re: Spangdahlem Road Race on 20 Aug
Thanks for posting up the pics, Jonesy. Glad the photos were taken early...since I was out before the end of the second lap! Our jerseys show up great on the traffic circle pics. Good luck to Jim and anyone else racing this weekend!

Chris, I don't mean to knit-pick, but if you could do a better job of showing off the sponsors names on the jersey as you cross the finish line, that would be great. . .

Re: Spangdahlem Road Race on 20 Aug
You're absolutely right, I should have been thinking about our sponsors as I crossed the line. Maybe I should have been pointing to their logos or something. Not to mention if I were sitting up with my hands in the air, maybe I wouldn't have looked as fat as I am . The guy that finished behind me is obviously a veteran pro...but wait a second, he didn't win! I hadn't "raced" on the road in over four years, so I was really concentrating on getting to the line first. The more races I win, the more celebratory I'll be at the finish. Sorry to let every one down with just a "W".
Re: Spangdahlem Road Race on 20 Aug
As far as I'm concerned, throwing your arms up when you come in second...even if it means winning one of the three or four divisions in the race is pure CHEESE! Keeping your head down and grinding the hell out of the pedals as you cross the line in first is much classier...IMHO.

Chris, is that the same guy that drafted in the pack the ENTIRE race, then went for it at the end?

Yes, the guy with his hands in the air is the guy that drafted the entire race, and decided he would finally put his nose in the wind for the victory! I don't understand why his legs weren't fresh as a daisy.
