Broke donw and bought a trainer

Post by Jonesy on Mon Jan 10, 2011 9:43 am

With all the crummy weather, my riding, like everyone else's took a big hit... So, despite the fact that it goes against my 'gummy bears are energy food' 'BEER counts as recovery hydration' sensibilities I bought a used magnetic trainer....

WOW it SUCKS!!! I mean it's great to have something I can hop on in whatever weather, without all sorts of gearing up etc. and then hop back off of and have my morning coffe without gearing down, putting the bike away, etc. etc.
but holy cow is it tedious!!! the most my sanity can take so far on it is about 80 minutes. I try to throw in some pretty agressive interval work in that time to make it worth my while, so it's good for getting a good workout on a crummy weather day when I toherwsie might not do anything, but MAN it's not anything resembling fun!

Ya...it sucks. I would recommend throwing a cycling video on. The time always passes faster and you feel like someone else is suffering with you.

Second the video thing. I have some old TDF video's, or even just a rental DVD. I hope you are at least not using nobbed tires. That will indeed drive you insane.

It's hard to get on that trainer day after day. I can last about 2 hours if I have some body on the tv or computer telling me to change gears and stand up. I usually watch a spinerval for this.

Yeah, Day after Day ain't gonna happen! This'll definitely be a 'when it's too crappy to ride' thing.

I did make an interval-based playlist ont he Ipod... 15 minutes warmup song, then alternating fast heavy songs and nice light easy songs at about two minutes each, then several 5-minute relaxing songs, then another set of 4 intervals followed by 15 minutes easy spinning. The grand total is an hour. Couple that with another 15 minutes of sher will pedaling, and that's about all I can hack right now... although putting a movie on is definitely the next thing I'll try...

I'm thinking I'll start with the flying scottsman...
