Epic K-Town to Wissembourg Ride: Plans

Post by gsmolin on Sun Apr 27, 2014 10:20 pm

OK, there's a few folks interested, so let's figure this thing out.

I'm a planner, so bear with me (we plan our ski trips a year in advance!)

I think it'd be a bit more direct to take the blue cross route from K-Town to Wissembourg and I see two advantages:
1. Its potentially about 30 km shorter
2. It avoids Rodalben

That said, I'd like to do this ride on a weekday so as to avoid scads of hikers. Any interest in doing it on the Friday, May 23rd training holiday?

This is a rain or shine ride--downpour = no ride. Anything short of a downpour = ride.

Starting point would be the KTown Hauptbahnhof. Finish point would be Wissembourg where we'd ride the train back to Germany.

Pace would be spirited with minimal stops (i.e. lunch, pee, 1-2 snack stops). Not trying to exclude anyone, but I'm highly interested in completing the whole shebang in one day. No big deal waiting for riders a couple times at the top of the steepest climbs, but we also need to push forward to get the route completed in one day. 125km on a mountain bike is a decent amount to bite off. That said, there's several cities along the route in case people have a mechanical or want to pop smoke.

Starting time would be early, like 7 AM. I expect this ride to take anywhere from 6-9 hours.

What does everyone think?

Any time the week of Jun 2nd thru Jun 6th? I'd take a day of leave obviously since this would be during the work week.

Looked at the schedule, and we will plan for Wed, the 4th of June. I know this is a weekday which necessitates leave, but in the grand scheme of things (emptier trails, family duties, etc), this is the best plan.

Starting time will be 0700 on 4 Jun.

I will post the exact starting place (it'll be near the KTown Hbf) soon.

UPDATE:

This ride is postponed due to factors beyond my control. However, it is still in the works for August time frame. This will be accomplished this summer!

And yes, French pastries are in order once we cross the border.
