Cycling in Northern Virginia
I finally got word from my assignments manager that I will be moving to Ft. Belvoir (Alexandria, VA area) in April. Does anyone have any information on road biking and/or mountain biking in that area? I am also interested in cyclocross, as I will probably take up that form of cycling next fall.

Re: Cycling in Northern Virginia
join Maryland off road enthusiasts. their forum is very good.
NoVA has some great riding. did a couple races in the area (we lived in MD but went to VA to race) and the trails there are really quite good.
you'll eventually make it to patapsco state park just south of baltimore, and its a ton of fun.

Re: Cycling in Northern Virginia
Thanks for the notes. I found MORE, and will get involved with them once I get my bikes off the shipping boat.
I am doing GAP & C&O together over 6 days this summer on my touring bike as a charity event (I will post here to try and get some fundraising support) and plan to get involved in the road racing scene once I regain my bike legs (I will be without my bikes for ~45 days).
I will look up Patapsco, as well. I found an MTB park about an hour away that looks pretty nice, about halfway between Trippstadt and Stromberg.

Re: Cycling in Northern Virginia
wakefield is awesome
fountainhead is even better
my home turf was fairland regional park--not worth driving to from NoVA i think.
i rode at lot at schaeffer farms.
rockburn is new--there was talk of converting some bootlegger trails in patapsco into a real terrain park and this might be it.
the nice thing i found about trails around there was that at any place you went, you could find well-maintained trails with excellent trail maps and markings.
if you're going to be at belvoir, i'd bet my bottom dollar you're going to ride the crap out of wakefield
also the cranky money race series was really awesome. and the fredericksburg off road dualthon series was a great series of events and really close to belvoir. don't miss the quantico race w/ the cranky monkey series.
oh, and at fountainhead, ride the teeter totter a couple times for me. and at one point in the singletrack system there, you'll be at the top of a ridge and there will be a "danger steep drop" sign encouraging you to take the easy way to the right. stay left; its worth it.
