Well this fell apart at the last minute. Thanks for driving Dan. Great day in th sun with Dan, Jamie, and Steve. Great time. Sorry we missed everyone else. As for pics...hopefully Jamie got decent shots because my point and poke was not great. Did the UCI set the course for suck pics? Boo to the sun location on the horizon.

Trip Report

Post by jvanhuis on Mon Jan 31, 2011 10:45 pm

It was cold and dark at 0745 at the Landstuhl train station Sunday morning. After the drunk from the cage club wandered off there were just three of us in the entire station, looking at each other until Matt finally asked "You guys with KMC?". Dan quickly decided f-this and offered to drive, we both readily accepted. Discussion followed and we were all pretty sure it was Jonesy's idea to get there at o'dark thirty in case the train was full, we owe you for that one.

Once in St. Wendel we skipped the official parking lots and poached some fence space across the street from the entrance. Who should appear next to us but Erik, Jen, Chad, and maybe a few others (it was early and friggen cold). A quick "see you inside" and they were off, never to be seen again - hope you guys had fun too!

The Women's race went first at 1100 and Katie Compton got off to a fast start.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Marianne Vos was not to be denied and caught her soon after this picture, and then dropped her like, well like me on that GWoog dirt road climb, never to be seen again.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The fans were quite amusing as well. Matt has some nice photos of bears doing the things that bears do in the woods, but I was all about the ostriches.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

After a short two hour break in 20 degree weather the Men's race got underway. The first few laps looked like a Belgian team time trial, here's the group coming over "doner hill".
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The course had some interesting spots, including a fairly large stair climb. Here is Zdenek Stybar showing Sven Nys how it's done.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
The crowd was mostly silent for Stybar, except this one Belgian lady. Pretty sure she's asking him politely to hold on and let Nys catch up.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The Americans were there but never really got it going, fun to see them in person though.
Timothy Johnson:

Jeremy Powers:

And Jonathan Page:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

My favorite shot of the day though turned out to be a random Slovakian dude (Vaclav Metlicka). Oh well, maybe his mom will like it.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Sven Nys did put in a hell of an effort though, but he never could catch Stybar.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Kevin Pauwels (10) did eventually catch the German rider Phillip Walsleben (43) to take the Bronze.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Gold of course went to Stybar (again).
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Thanks again to Dan for driving, and no thanks to Matt, who you might remember insisted that "we drink American beer" and then proceeded to down a few bottles of Chimay without sharing, bastard... Just kidding (mostly). Hope you guys had as much fun as we all did, catch you next trip.

Belgian Team Time Trial...LOL. That is some funny stuff. If memory serves you were drinking German beer Jamie! Yes, Belgian Bears do pee in the woods. I was too at that point however.

If you had seen his gear, you would know why they came out so good. He was rivaling the UCI media guys with camera equipment.

Good stuff!!! It's funny how at the end of the video Katie is the only one shown talking during the interviews...I think they're trying to tell us something???

Ya...it's a haul. Pretty much makes it a two day event...which wouldn't be such a bad thing. I'll be watching it here at the house with some eats...if anyone is interested.

I would offer to have a World CX shindig at my place, but i'm without a couch at the moment. However, I do have plenty of chairs and a large enough TV... we could get Donner boxes with fries from around the corner and open the windows, play some American top 40 hits and put back a couple of beers ... just like being there!

Question is how do we simulate mud in your house? It isn't cross if you are walking softly so you don't fall down.

A case of beer, four dudes with shovels and a truck would do the trick.

OK so I was just about to buy a kinder pool and some bags of potting soil for the living room and extend an invite to my Belgian friend when the "oh shucks!" moment came ... I'm going to be in Berlin for the Black Keys show that weekend.

Sorry!

Anybody know the air times for the worlds this weekend. I'm thinking it should be on German TV...

TV schedule at the following link, but doesn't look like any German channels. However, maybe you get some of the Belgium, France, Netherlands channels? Looks like streaming on the internet is an option as well.

Go to Cyclingfans.com and they will have a live link. If Eurosport is showing it, you can buy a month subscription to their online streaming service. That is what I use for watching the Tour in July. It is a very good HD connection.

Looks like the sandy parts of the course are pretty difficult and a lot of the riders have been reduced to running:

It's gonna be a tough course for the pros. I watched the U23 race today and it was a fierce battle between two Dutch riders and a Belgian. Tough little Dutch dude (Lars Van Der Haar) won w/ the last lap full of drama and lead changes. Hope tomorrow's races are as good!
