Tour of Flanders
Just received this email:
Registrations are open! Attention: limited registrations!
Saturday 5 April 2014 will be a heroic day. Thousands of cycling tourists will once again follow in the footsteps of their cycling heroes and ride their own Tour of Flanders.
Two important reasons to register as soon as possible!
On demand of the public authorities and to guarantee access on all hills, only 16000 participants will be allowed to register. So register now to be sure of your place.
Secondly, early registrations will be rewarded with a reduced fee.
You too can take up this unique challenge and participate in the classic among cycling tourism trips. Try to do better than your friends, surprise your family, or just successfully make it to the end. So the next day, you can relax and enjoy the pros racing over the same route.
Register and start dreaming of that final physical effort on the Paterberg and the Oude Kwaremont, then your triumphant victory gesture as you cross the finishing line in Oudenaarde. To register: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Re: Tour of Flanders
I did the middle distance (133km) last year. It is a great ride, though brutally demanding through the cobblestones. If you go, I have a few recommendations:
1. Bring cold weather and wet weather clothing, March/April in Belgium can be rough.
2. Run the biggest tires you can fit on your bike; consider riding a hard tail mountain bike or cyclocross bike. Yes, the roads are that rough. I ran 28mm on my Madone, and was beaten up pretty badly.
3. Find a hotel within 20km of the end point, and ride from the hotel. Parking is atrocious on ride day. If you are riding the long ride (~260km), a shuttle is available to take you and your bike from the end point to the start point. The middle and short distances start and end at the same point.
4. Get to the start point early, really early, or quite late. The hardest part of the cobble climbs was avoiding all the other riders who stop without warning right in the middle of the climb. The only time I had to get off my bike during a climb was when someone stopped directly in front of me.
5. Be sure to have plenty of salt in you diet in the days leading up to the ride, and try to get a hotel room with an actual tub, so you can soak after the ride.
6. Enjoy Belgian beer!

Re: Tour of Flanders
Good info, I am looking on doing Paris Roubaix Challenge which is on the 12th of April.
But if there is a group going for Flander I might have to suffer twice!!

I had my fun a few years ago riding with 15,000 of my closest friends. Paris Roubaix or Amstel Gold is on my radar this year.

Well so I booked a hotel at Flanders=)
I am mainly shooting for Roubaix the weekend after so might just go for the 80Km route unless anyone wants to join me for the 130Km?
Easy 50miles who's in!

Re: Tour of Flanders
Pending PCS budgeting issues allowing me to PCS (I am a civilian), I wouldn't mind doing the 130K. I am hoping to PCS to Ramstein in the beginning of February.DuviVr6 wrote:Well so I booked a hotel at Flanders=)

Let me know the name of the motel you are in and I will look at booking a room.
