Leave is in!

Post by airborne.s2000 on Tue Feb 12, 2013 11:05 am

I just sent my leave form to my boss for the whole week. Are we strapping fuel cans to the outside of the van? I have a couple.

I'm only 20% redneck, and to do that would take at least 80% redneck. How 'bout we keep the strappings-on limited to bikes, and leave some roof space in case anyone decides AAFES bean dip is a good choice for road food.

I can't even begin to imagine how insane and stupid I might be for wanting to do this! I'll have to check the dates though. Freak'n Awesome! It reminds me of the Red Bull Last Man Standing events for enduro!!!

All,

With tears in my eyes, I write this.....no rainbow...sniff sniff... My friggin rental house in Georgia sucked all of my disposable income away, by actually going down a drain....as in major plumbing work had to be done....So, I must bow out of mega this year. However, this event is on my bucket list of things to do so look for me next year.

We need to lock down a little closer how/when we are traveling. When do we intend to leave the KMC area (date & time)? When will we return? My leave is good to go, but I need to plan.

We should leave very early on the 9th, and return very late on the 14th.  That's the timeframe have lodging.  There are only three of us confirmed, so it should be a single-vehicle deal.  We need to roshambo for method of conveyance.  Three people, three bikes, and gear- we can rent a van, if vehicles are an issue.  I already coordinated lodging and got our med exams, so I'd rather not use my credit card to secure a rental vehicle, too.  I'd like to know what gas/vehicle options and costs we have between us.  My van is slow, Steve's van isn't good for the mileage, and Bobby's convertible has a thrown rod.  The train is a no-go, so a rental seems like the most reliable means.  Could you take that on, Bobby?  I was planning on 4-5 people initially.  Everything split three ways now, unless we can recruit another rider.

I will set up a rental car for the trip. I will likely get an extra rack for a bike on my wife's car and take that, leavin the rental for her. With a rear hanging rack and the hitch rack, all three bikes will fit on the outside of the Honda Fit, leaving the cargo area open for bags, and still have seating for four. The little car is quite comfortable, should work well, and will save money on needing to rent something big enough for three bikes and all our baggage.

Thoughts?

I am good with it. I have a large ski/cargo box if you want to add that to the roof for more cargo space.

How does it mount to the roof? Could be good. I got a lash on rack for the 3rd bike today for 8€, and the Hausfrau says she doesn't need the car during that time frame, so we will only need fuel. The Fit gets ~30mpg, so that will help with costs.

I, unfortunately, do not have any cross bars on the Fit, so the cargo box is out. Still, the car should have plenty of space, assuming you both don't bring a spare bike (I know Steve will have all of a spare bike except the frame, but that should still work). The Fit has a robust cargo space, and two full rows of seating. We can flip down the driver side rear seat for a bit more storage, still leaving the 60% rear seat for one passenger. We probably won't be able to see out the rear window, but that will be mostly eclipsed by the bikes anyway.

The last step for me is to check that the hitch bike rack and the clip on rack can work together. I will check that sometime this week.

I am planning to take my big yellow duffel with my bike gear, a smaller bag with clothes and toiletries, and possibly a second set of wheels. Please let me know what you are planning on bringing, so I can estimate space requirements.

I think we're all planning about the same loadout.  I'll have a spare front wheel, tourniquets, CLS bag, ice packs, and a set of crutches.  Does anybody have some splinting material and a neck doughnut?

I have a 2 inch hitch mount carrier that holds four bikes.  If you have the hitch you are welcome to borough the carrier.

We need to coordinate link up times for Tuesday. Perhaps we can try to mount your bars and trunk rack at your place, assuming we need the space.

I need a few details, assuming I am picking everyone up at their homes. I know where to find John, but I need your address, Steve. I also need the address of the flat in France to plug into my GPS.

When do we plan to roll on Tuesday (or are we rolling Monday)? Looks like a 8+ hour drive, so I doubt we are getting any rides in on Tuesday, but it would be nice to be there before it is too dark. I figure 30 minutes at John's place to load up, plus 30-60 minutes at Steve's (the longer time is to mount the roof rack, if needed). So figure 9.5 hours from when I leave my flat. I am willing to roll from my place NET 0700, which should put us in Alpe d'Huez around 1700. Sound good?

I will be at johns place Monday. I think a late Monday/early Tuesday departure would be ideal. Send me a pic of the rails on your car. Do you have room in your rack for our 3 bikes?

The car is a stock Honda Fit, I don't have a picture. I have enough rack space for three bikes; I bought a clip on rack to hold the third bike.

I am game to leave Monday evening, but we need to know if we can get into the flat early Tuesday morning.
