Okay, registration is open. My skills en Français c'est de la merde complète, so it's a stumble trying to figure out the auto-translated registration page. Go to the Megavalanche site, set language to English, then go to the right side bar for registration. This will set you on the registration process with Engage Sports, the 3rd party organizer. After you register for their site, go in again and select the Megavalanche for l'Alpe d'Huez 8-14 July 2013. Select the 6-day package for your general registration and lift pass. Then there is a premium package option that includes shuttle service and sports complex access, I decided to skip that part since we'll have a hot shower no matter where we end up. The shuttle service can be bought at the race if we need it. Jerseys are 39 EUR, good deal for a race jersey... The base fee is about 100 EUR.

I can't register other people, and have no fking clue how the French intended to implement that. The site is kinda janky, not different from other MTB event registrations we've done.

I have yet to secure an apartment for the week. I wanted to see how registration went before committing to that... Details to come.

I still think it would be best to split right after work on the 8th, and ride like hell on the 9th and 10th. The 11th is course prep and the expo, not completely sure if we can ride that day. Qualifiers on the 12th to seed for either the 13th or 14th depending on placement. Bail out for a long drive back on the 14th.

Oh, one other thing- buy the Multisport Assur insurance for 47 EUR for the year. It is a hell of a lot better than a doctor's note and signing a waiver of liability, and should make the process easier when we go pick up our plates. Small price to pay for a helicopter ride to the brain surgery clinic, facial reconstruction, hip screws, and an amateur colonoscopy. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Okay, I have requests in on five different apartments. I think we can get the accommodations we need for under 500 EUR for the week, if y'all don't mind sleeping in bunk beds and sofa beds in a dinky flat. I say hu-gaf, it's cheap and the party is outside anyway. The only stipulation that I included was parking for 2 vehicles and explicit permission to lock bikes on the private balconies for security. We'll see what comes back to me, but it looks like with any of the places I contacted we can sleep 4 peeps. If anyone wants to crash on the floor last minute, it's their choice, nothing says they can't.

This is the apartment we have reserved. I dealt directly with the landlord. There is a double bed, a pair of bunks, and a sofa-bed. We have permission to lock our bikes on the balcony, and there are washing machines for our stanky gear. Also we can park all the vehicles we want, which will be a challenge with this event nearly overlapping the famous TDF stage.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I'm putting down 50%. 5 nights for 650 EUR total, so that's 43 EUR person/night for 3 peeps, or 33 EUR for 4 peeps. There were cheaper options, but with bikes and gear there would be no place to sit. Not bad for a resort town.

I am getting closer to signing up for this one, but not ready to do it tonight. If I bite late, I will throw cash towards some floor space in the flat, assuming anyone wants to have me in their space.

Nope, not optional. It's mandatory fun.

I'm in!

Post by airborne.s2000 on Sat Feb 09, 2013 4:25 pm

OK, my wife is moving to Seattle at the beginning of July, so I will be free to spend all my time doing ridiculous bike stuff.

I am coming to the race. I would like to stay with the group, and will pitch in for gas, lodging and food. ::big, stupid grin::

I am buying a full face helm from John, along with his body armor, and plan to buy a set of knee pads and padded shorts. Any other suggestions?

Yes: Practice, practice, practice!

Have the right tires, a spare set of brake pads, plus anything else that would save the day if you carried a spare.

Also a good idea to put in your leave request ASAP. The fewer vehicles we have to take, the better- four of us could fit in the van, but we need to depart/return at the same time.
