Light Bicycle Group Buy?
Would anyone be interested in combining an order with me for carbon rims and accessories from Light Bicycle?
I want to order a set of 26er rims in 3K matte, a carbon MTB handlebar (if they actually have one), a set of road rims , and an integrated road bar.
Light Bicycle offers a discount (not sure how much) if we order several together, and we can have it all delivered to me, and use customs documentation from the US customs office to avoid the Zoll issue (35% import tax).
Note: you must be logged into the forum to see my links.

Why not ship to your APO box and not have to deal with German import tax and avoidance maneuvers? Nancy (light bicycles) told me shipping to APO is not a problem.

Re: Light Bicycle Group Buy?
Shipping to the APO address for one pair of rims is $40.00 more or less, 10 pairs of rims is $40.00 more or less. Savings on shipping costs is the reason for the consolidated buy.

Re: Light Bicycle Group Buy?
Though I don't have an economics degree nor did I sleep in a holiday inn express last night, I do understand the reduced cost of shipping. Where you ship and the bureaucracy you have to deal with is my point. IMO, APO is the better option and if I add my order to the group, it is on the condition of it being shipped APO as I value speed over cost.
LB won't be back until Feb 18 and carbon rims (wide and normal) have a 10 day lead time before shipped. I would be in for 2 rims UD matte finish but not sure yet on width.

Re: Light Bicycle Group Buy?
They do have the MTB handlebars ($39 for 66cm). I would guess they could make longer/shorter. I still need to decide on a length, probably will match the length of the alloy bar I have on the Mojo now. Nancy told me she would offer a discount based on what I wanted to order alone, but not exactly how much of a discount, and agreed to toss out the PayPal fee. (Not surprising, I was requesting ~$1000 worth of carbon just for me.
Point of arrival for shipping by APO works for me. Does anyone take issue with APO shipping? I will use my shipping address and everyone can pick up from me ( thus, if I am the point of contact for the group buy, I will either have money for the parts, or, at least, some nice bike parts I don't need.)

PayPal
Since I will be paying Light Bicycle via PayPal, I prefer to collect the upfront money via PayPal. Airborne dot s2000 at gmail dot com.
You can send me the money for the retail price as listed on the website, letting me know in the PayPal notes what you want to order. Then I can price the entire order more quickly, reduce the delay somewhat. This requires you to trust me to pass on the savings. If we go this route, I will place the order next Sunday, giving everyone one week to send me money via PayPal, or make some other arrangements with me.
Right now, Davide, Chad, Eric, and John have expressed interest. I am ordering next Sunday, anyone who has told me what they want and given me money (or told me how and when they will pay me) is in the order. Everyone else can make their own arrangements. I am not trying to be harsh, but I don't want to wait around.

I got an answer from LightCycles for the wheels.
I confirm this wheel-set for me, even if it seems a bit overpriced. 359 USD for Hubs and spokes is not that cheap but still cheaper than in Germany.
Hello David,
For lefty hubs, it is only black and red. Is it ok for you? Please find attached picture.
The price for wheelset as below is USD689/pair.
- 420g 29er rims in matte ud
- black pillar psr x-tra 1420 aero spokes spokes and black nipples
- D712 hub for shimano 10 speed with 10mm thrue axle (rear), black or red to match the lefty front hub.
-lefty hub (front): black or red
May i know your shipping address please? Then I can get the shipping cost accordingly for you.
Thanks,
Nancy
Can we try to ask for a discount if we order several items together? I guess we can ask at least for a 10% discount

Prices from Light Bicycle
Here is what I have received from Nancy (no shipping quote yet):
4 wide 26er rims: USD142/pcs, USD8 cheaper
2 29er rims: USD157/pcs, USD8 cheaper
1 integrated road bar: USD99/pcs
1 38mm road wheel set: USD522/pair, USD16 cheaper
2 29er rims: USD160/pcs, USD5 cheaper
1 29er wheel set w/lefty hub USD720/pair, USD10 cheaper
I'm not sure why the second set of 29er rims came in more expensive, we can probably adjust down.
I will need exactly what you want (26/29, width, matte/glossy. UD/3K/12K, rim/wheel set) with money by Saturday. On Sunday, I will place my order, with or without the others, as she has offered me some discount on just the items I wanted, and I am impatient.

Is the lefty set mine? Nancy quoted its 689USD. I guess 720 is the price including shipping costs...
I am waiting for the hub price in Germany at wheelsport (Tune Kong + Cannonball). Frank will be be back with an answer on Friday and I will transfer money via paypal on Friday afternoon for the wheelset or, in case Frank quote is reasonable, only for rims. (USD160/pcs).
I'll send you an sms as soon as I have some news.

Re: Light Bicycle Group Buy?
^ Well, hot damn, Supposedly LB is making an improved version of the 29er rims, MAYBE ready for shipping after the 17th of Febuary. However, you have to request them with this a statement something like this: Please make and ship wider 29er rims that use the new process.
See here: http://www.light-bicycle.com/technology-improve-of-light-bicycle-carbon-mtb-650b-rims.html
If this request for the improved versions slows down the entire order, I can wait and get my 29er rims later on.

So $284 plus shipsky gets me a pair of UD-Matte, 32-hole, wide-26" rims. Specify 400-gram reinforced version. I'll pee-pal you the money by the deadline. Have you sourced your hubs, spokes, and neeples?

Re: Light Bicycle Group Buy?
I haven't worked hubs, spokes, nipples yet. I am still debating on trying to use the parts from the wheel set I have, although I am also considering ordering the rims with the spoke holes only cut through the first layer of the rim, leaving a continuous CF layer inside the rim, and using those fancy magnetically aligned nipples. I figure I have a little time to decide after I place the order.

Re: Light Bicycle Group Buy?
The chance of the spoke length being correct is slim. The rim diameters are rarely the same. Even if they are the same, re-using spokes is never a good idea. Once the wheel is tensioned, you are putting stress on the spokes at certain points from the bends at the hub, and contact points where they cross. To try to make a spoke do that again isn't a good idea. Wheels I have seen re-use spokes often have spoke failures while riding. Not worth trying to save twenty bucks on new spokes and risk ruining a ride. If you get pimp new carbon hoops, spend the cabbage to get new spokes. Keep the built wheels you have as a spare set.

Re: Light Bicycle Group Buy?
Totally dis-agree with your re-using spoke theory. Most of my personal wheel builds of about 20, have been with re-used spokes. I have never had a problem with re-using DT Swiss spokes, ever. Lot's of pro and con discussions on the 'net about this subject. I am pro re-using spokes. If the spokes are too long on a wheel with a crappy rim, I use a Hozan Spoke Threading Machine to correct the lenght.

Re: Light Bicycle Group Buy?
The ERD on the LB 26" rims is within +/- 1 mm of many rims, including the Flow, DT EX series, and Transition 32- that adds up to every traditionally-laced MTB wheel I own. Makes for a direct swap. At $2.30 a piece, I'll re-use spokes on a serviceable wheelset for a rim swap, and spare you the strengths and materials engineering lecture.

Re: Light Bicycle Group Buy?
My 2 pennies in the mix: Having built my share of wheels, I would say there is no reason spokes can't be reused as long as there are no gashes caused by getting a pedal or stick stuck in there. This article (not necessarily peer reviewed) off Sheldon Brown's site written by Jobst Brandt sums it up quite nicely in a compact non engineering fashion in which I would tend to agree with:
http://sheldonbrown.com/brandt/reusing-spokes.html
My caveat: I have never reused spokes because I am anal about my builds and like working with new threads and shiny new things, but if saving a few dead prez's are at the top of your list, and you have a good idea of the history of the spokes, it is doable.
Hey Eric, how much did you pay for the Hozan Macheen?
